My sense of style was instilled in me early by my elegant French mother and my grandmother, who formerly worked for Balenciaga. They passed on to me a discriminating eye for balance and proportion and a love of fashion that I have carried with me throughout my life. For 20 years, I held positions in corporate America, in human resources, financial planning and management and, regardless of the job, the gifts I inherited went with me. People routinely paid me compliments about what I was wearing, asked me to shop with them and checked with me for fashion advice. Often coworkers would remark, “You should pursue a job in fashion.” But in the midst of a fast-paced professional life, who has the time?
A corporate downsizing, however, gave me the time. And in the subsequent sabbatical I took, a little voice in my head kept repeating, “fashion, fashion, fashion.” I wasn’t really sure of the direction I was headed, until my husband sent me an e-mail with two words in the subject line: “Image Consultant.” And that was it. Finally, I had an opportunity to turn my fashion sense and love of people into a career. The next step was to gain the credentials needed to really launch my career.
An Internet search led me to Sonya Barnes, President of the Atlanta AICI Chapter. Sonya told me about her experience with the London Image Institute and invited me to my very first AICI meeting. Ironically enough, Lynne Marks, owner of LII, was at that meeting and after an interview on the spot, recommended that I take the one remaining slot in her April 2004 class. I believe that nothing in life is an accident -- I wrote Lynne a check that night.
The Executive Course was Image Consulting “Boot Camp!” Intense and powerful, it was one of the best things I’d ever done for myself and my career. Lynne really showed me how to believe in myself. She even helped me overcome my fear of public speaking; I now speak to dozens of people at a time and love it!
I’m so grateful to Lynne and The London Image Institute for giving me the tools I needed to pursue my passion. My career as an image consultant is so rewarding -- there is nothing more gratifying than helping people feel good about themselves, gain a new level of self confidence and achieve their life’s goals. Had someone told me five years ago that I would love to speak in public and would teach others how to dress and present themselves, I would have told them they were crazy. But here I am, a successful image consultant, living the life of my dreams.
