Welcome to the Personal Branding and Image Consulting Blog!
What is Personal Branding? When we look at someone for the first time, our initial, split-second contact with people is eye-to-body. We look at their clothes first, then their faces. Studies have shown that we evaluate each other in two seconds or less! Appearance and body language communicate subtle messages to the receiver. This is particularly important in situations where first impressions count.
Take the interview for example. Your resume gets five to seven seconds. If it passes and you are asked in for an interview, you get two to ten seconds. How will you stand out from the crowd?
Top Ten mistakes in the interview:
1. Wearing flip-flops, tank tops, thigh-high minis, jeans, shorts and other inappropriate interview dress.
2. Bringing in pets and family members!
3. Combing hair.
4. Wearing dark glasses throughout the interview.
5. Blaming former employees or boss for current out of work status.
6. Exaggerating past achievements.
7. Showing cleavage. Your interview may last longer but you won't land the job!
8. Revealing your true purpose: "I'm only here to get the benefits".
9. Rambling, off the subject answers.
10. Not doing any research about the company beforehand.
Your image and practices project messages and your resume tells your professional story. Personal Branding requires that ALL forms of your communication package are of a consistently high quality. The way you look, speak and behave should be congruent. They should all match your written communication.
PERSONAL BRAND CONSISTENCY
1. Dress at the same high standard all the time. If people react positively to your appearance each time they see you, they will also build up a level of trust in your performance in other areas, such as your work skills, intelligence, capabilities and competence.
2. Check the culture of the company. If it is casual, that does not mean shorts or jeans for you. Wear a jacket and tie, but take the jacket off.
3. Dress for your future in that company. Let the interviewer see that he can place you immediately and you are ready not only for that job, but that you are promotable.
3. Wear tailored clothes in good quality fabrics. Fabric, construction and finishing speak volumes.
4. Wear silent jewelry.
5. Check the details. Good grooming communicates messages. Untidy and wrinkled clothes, clothes and shoes needing repair, too much makeup and strange fashions can lose you the job.
6. Be prepared. Don't just describe your previous job. Use examples and illustrate your successes with proof and results.
