The image industry first started in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Before that “image” for the general public was not a familiar concept and principles in dress sense were only taught at fashion, finishing and modeling schools. Politicians, models, TV personalities and celebrities were the only likely candidates for an image makeover.
In the 80’s several forces combined to pave the way for the image industry to emerge. John Molloy’s Dress for Success book enjoyed huge popularity and the seasonal color theories swept through the world. At the same time women were entering the work force in increasing numbers and competing in a man’s world. They saw that image mattered to their upward mobility and they spent money on their appearance.
